Red-tailed Hawk Spring weather makes the Red-tailed Hawk happier. Melting snow makes hunting field mice and other critters so much easier. Today, the hawk was perched high in the branches of the areas tallest tree; just waiting to spot its next prey.
Red-tailed Hawk This backyard hawk has successfully evaded my camera for quite awhile. Hopefully, I’ll be able to improve future images.
The Hawk Red-tailed Hawks frequent the areas along my walkabout. His guy seemed to be giving me the hawk stare. Even though lots of folks walk along this trail and this hawk should be accustomed to seeing and dealing with people, I still backed off at this point so he would not fly off.
The Red-tailed Hawk was hunting today flying from one tree to another looking for a better perch to spot prey. The wind was pretty strong so I was able to get close enough for a decent image.
This Juvenile Red-tailed Hawk had captured prey and was calmly eating it in the tree. Finally, he finished and decided to fly. Considering, this shot was handheld with an effective focal length of 810mm, I was happy to get a decent image.
Hawk vs. Snake It’s really no match; the hawk wins almost every time. Tonight I attended a talk given by John Granata, an accomplished fine art photographer and artist, sponsored by MAPS, Morton Arboretum Photographers Society. It was too dark to capture an image after the talk so I found an image captured at the arboretum a few years ago. This image is one of a series of this hawk captured just off the road going through the arboretum. He was too busy with the snake to worry about a few vehicles passing by. By the way, if you live in northern Illinois and have not been to the Morton Arboretum, you are missing a great treat.
This Immature Red-tailed Hawk did not seem to mind as the cars passed by just a few feet from where it was consuming its prey, a snake. The image was captured handheld on my knees down the road a bit.
