Great Blue Heron Fishing
Great Blue Heron Fishing Nice to see the herons back on the water fishing along my walkabout trails! This guy was always behinds some weeds so the image could be better.

This Great Blue Heron on Lake Patagonia was wintering in Arizona. Smart bird; sure beats the cold Illinois winter.
Heron Silhouette It’s just a cool image while walking along the lake.
Great Blue Heron Sitting This Great Blue Heron stayed in the same place on the bank of the lake all day. Sometimes, it stood up. Sometimes, it sat. But, it stayed there. I thought it might be injured or sick. Finally, in later afternoon, it left. I did not see it leave so I picked up the camera and went out to see if it was anywhere to be seen. As I was walking along the lakeshore, it was fishing in the shallows. Nice to see it was in good health!
It’s not the best Great Blue Heron image I’ve ever captured, but it’s the first one this year. It might seem relatively easy to capture a good image of these big birds. Unfortunately, it does take a good bit of patience and a tad bit of luck along with a healthy understanding of the bird’s habits.
Great Blue Heron Reflection On tonight’s walkabout, I stumbled upon a Great Blue Heron and scared it. It’s a magnificent sight flying away.
This Great Blue Heron has been coming back to the same pond for many years. A couple of years ago the humans who oversee the maintenance of the pond decided to “improve it” by cutting all the weeds around it, lining the shore with gravel, and updating the drainage. Almost immediately, the herons decided the pond was not such a good place to hang out; too many humans and not enough cover. Finally, now that it’s August and the weeds are much taller around the pond, the herons are beginning to come back. This old guy seemed to know me and knew I was not a threat. He let me walk all the way down the trail within 30 yards of his position and he did not move; not even a hint of movement suggesting I was getting too close. Most herons would have flown. It was one of those times when you feel one with the universe; thanks to a Great Blue Heron.
Great Blue Heron are normally quite common around here. For some reason, fewer birds are staying this year.
