Nikon D300 Salad | Wind Cave NP Lone Tree

Nikon D300 Salad | Wind Cave NP Lone Tree

Nikon D300 Salad | Wind Cave NP Lone Tree   Each national park has a character of it’s own. “Solitude” describes Wind Cave NP, above the ground, particularly in the off-season.  At solitary Wind Cave, it’s all about the land and its wildlife; a nature photographer’s heaven.  This image tries to capture some of that solitude with a lonely gravel road as far as the eye can see.

The Back Story  A decent image of this tree had eluded me for several years. I have probably taken hundreds of images of this tree. I have returned several times since my first trip to Wind Cave NP.  Each time capturing images of this lone road tree.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | Oxbow Bend Snake River Mountains

Nikon D300 Salad | Oxbow Bend Snake River Mountains

Nikon D300 Salad | Oxbow Bend Snake River Mountains   OxBow Bend is located along the Snake River near Great Tetons NP.  It’s one of the most photographed places on earth.  In this image, Mt. Moran stands majestic in the background.  Several coyote packs could be heard in the distance.  Also, black bear, grizzly bear, moose, elk, and wolves call this area home.  Unfortunately, the wildlife did not appear except for a couple of river otters.  As Mt. Moran became reflected in the Snake River and the morning shadows began to change, this composition appeared.

The Back Story   To capture this image, I arrived at the the Ox Bow Bend turnoff a little before o’dark thirty.  A light snow cover greeted me at the turnoff.  Just after first light, I climbed down the slightly frozen river bank to river’s edge.  Upon setting up my tripod behind several rocks, I waited for any wildlife that might amble by my position.  The crisp, cold morning air, the light spring snow cover, and the calm, no wind quiet of this remote place made me appreciate the scene in front of my lens.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | Oxbow Bend Snake River Shore Line   OxBow Bend is located along the Snake River near Great Tetons NP.  It’s one of the most photographed places on earth.  This view at Oxbow Bend, away from the mountains, creates a bit different mood.  Of course, without the nice morning blue sky, this image would be flat without the cold blue color cast.  The sky makes all the difference.

Nikon D300 Salad | Newborn Bison in Yellowstone

Nikon D300 Salad | Newborn Bison in Yellowstone   This newborn, still unsure of its ability to walk, was actually 15-20 minutes old when this image was captured.  In April and May our national parks like Yellowstone abound with similar stories of new life enjoying the warmer spring weather.

The Back Story    This image was captured by a simple click at a road turnoff.    Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | Montana Trains

Nikon D300 Salad | Montana Trains   You can’t travel much through Montana without noticing the trains.  Montana is a long state and trains linking the east and west travel through the mountain valleys carrying many products from coal to aircraft fuselages.  Yes, that’s a 737 fuselage on the car right behind the engine.  It’s not a sight you see everyday.  Although if you live near the mountain valleys in Montana, you might see it more often.  To see more transport images, see Planes Trains & Automobiles | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story    This image came from a simple click at a highway turnoff along the railroad tracks.    Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | Pathway to Spring

Nikon D300 Salad | Pathway to Spring   Springtime bursts with life at Crabtree Nature Center.  From tree buds to turtles, spring brings to life all that is natural in northern Illinois.  OK, it’s not spring right now.  Still, it’s a cool image in my book.  See Way Cool | a 7 Image Story for more of my favorite off beat images.

Nikon D300 Salad | Cessna 185 on Skis

Nikon D300 Salad | Cessna 185 on Skis

Nikon D300 Salad | Cessna 185 on Skis   Not many folks hold a lake party in the middle of the winter.  However, as part of a day after New Years Day party, this Cessna 185 was giving ski plane rides on Pleasant Lake.  The lake is pretty small so good piloting technique is necessary.  For more information and images, go to Ski Plane Weekend | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story    To complicate matters, the mid-teen temperatures made waiting on the frozen lake for the next landing a bit chilly. The snow kicked up by the propeller and skis add to the drama. Except for the cold weather, it was a simple click.  Sure, I was lucky to get some prop blur with a 1/400s shutter speed.    Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.
