Nikon D300 Salad | Vapor

Nikon D300 Salad | Vapor

Nikon D300 Salad | Vapor   The Chicago Air & Water Show is a really nice venue for capturing aircraft images of the Blue Angels.  You can’t always pick the background, but even with these bald skies, the vapor trail provides some contrast. The Blue Angels have been performing since 1946, making it the oldest formal flying aerobatics team in the USA.  For more information and images, see Chicago Air & Water | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   This image was captured using bursts of clicks while panning and keeping the subject in the finder.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | Chicago Air & Water

Nikon D300 Salad | Chicago Air & Water    The Chicago Air & Water Show is a really nice venue for capturing aircraft images along the beach.  Before the air show gets started, there’s time for a nice Chicago skyline image.  For more information and images, see Chicago Air & Water | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   This image turned out to be a simple click after walking out on the breakwater.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | F/A 18 Super Hornet

Nikon D300 Salad | F/A 18 Super Hornet

Nikon D300 Salad | F/A 18 Super Hornet    The Chicago Air & Water Show is a really nice venue for capturing aircraft images along the beach, particularly if you like jets.  You can’t always pick the background, but even with these bald skies, the vapor trail provides some contrast. Notice the “F/A” in the F/A-18 designation since it’s both a fighter and an attack aircraft. The Super Hornet is a twin-engine, carrier-capable, multi-role fighter and attack aircraft. It has an internal 20 mm M61 rotary cannon and can also carry air-to-air missiles and air-to-surface weapons. Turn & burn!  For more information and images, see Fighter Jets | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   Capturing just the right image of a fast mover like the Super Hornet requires good panning skills and dozens of images from burst mode shooting.  It’s all about keeping the plane in the frame whiling panning and clicking as the plane zooms past.  It’s an exciting day with few calm moments.  Calm comes during post processing when reviewing your great images.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | B-25 Cockpit

Nikon D300 Salad | B-25 Cockpit

Nikon D300 Salad | B-25 Cockpit    Except for the GPS moving map in the center, the instrument panel of this B-25 Mitchell looks pretty much as it did in 1944.  Pilots loved the plane.  The B-25 was easier to fly than the B-26, which preceded it.  And, it could take an incredible damage from enemy fire and still bring its crew home.  The crew chiefs and mechanics also found it easier to maintain than the B-26.   To learn more about Doolittle Raiders Reunion, see Doolittle Raiders Reunion | a 7 Image Story.  To learn more about the B-25 Mitchell, see North American B-25 Mitchell | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story  This image came from a simple click after climbing into the cockpit.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | B-25 Miss Mitchell

Nikon D300 Salad | B-25 Miss Mitchell    Miss Mitchell takes off from Grimes Field headed to the Air Force Museum Airfield to attend the 70th Anniversary of the Doolittle Raid.  The B-25J “Miss Mitchell” served in the 310th Bomb Group, 57th Bomb Wing of the 12th Air Force in North Africa and Italy completing over 130 missions with no crew fatalities.  After a 12 year restoration by the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing, Miss Mitchell took her first flight on April 18, 1992 ~ exactly 50 years to the day of the Doolittle raid.  Visit the Commemorative Air Force Minnesota Wing site to learn more about Miss Mitchell.   To learn more about Doolittle Raiders Reunion, see Doolittle Raiders Reunion | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story  Capturing this image required a burst of clicks while panning during Miss Mitchell’s takeoff run.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | Wet B-25

Nikon D300 Salad | Wet B-25

Nikon D300 Salad | Wet B-25    The crew of Miss Mitchell checked out the B-25 after a heavy rain shower.  Miss Mitchell had come to Grimes Field in Urbana, OH while preparing to attend the 70th Reunion of the Doolittle Raiders at the Air Force Museum.  Twenty B-25 aircraft attended the reunion the following day.   To learn more about Doolittle Raiders Reunion, see Doolittle Raiders Reunion | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   During the rain shower, I was in the Champaign Aviation Museum hangar chatting with a WWII B-25 pilot with 65 combat missions in Europe.  He had been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.  And, he still flew a Beech Bonanza with his son.  Anyway, I just happened to walk pasted the hangar door just after the shower ended.  Then, just a simple click; didn’t even get wet.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | Wolf Park Wolf

Nikon D300 Salad | Wolfpark Wolf

Nikon D300 Salad | Wolf Park Wolf    Normally, I don’t capture images of captive wildlife.  Wolf Park treats their wolves like they were in the wild and conducts wolf research in conjunction with major universities and national parks.  They offer a few opportunities each year for photogs to learn and photograph from inside the enclosure (large, think 40 acres) with the wolves.   It’s an interesting experience; not necessarily for the faint of heart.  For more information and images, see Wolf Park Wolves | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   This image was captured inside the wolf enclosure.  Some folks have asked me, if the wolf was close.  Well, with a 135mm lens, he wasn’t right next to me, but he was still pretty close; a few feet.  If this wolf had not been socialized, the experience would have been more than a bit scary.  Of course, in the wild, I would have maybe one chance in ten million, to get this close to a wolf.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon D300 Salad | Bison Snow

Nikon D300 Salad | Bison Snow

Nikon D300 Salad | Bison Snow    More snow; we need more snow for the Bisons.  Actually, the deep snow makes it much more difficult for the Bison to get to the underlying grass.  Bison are year round grazers requiring water every day. They eat primarily grasses, but will also eat flowering plants, lichens, and woody plant leaves. In the winter, they sweep their heads from side to side to clear the snow.  For more information and images, go to American Bison | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story  This image come from a simple click captured using my vehicle for a blind and tripod.  The vehicle also provides protection from the Bison.     Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.
