Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Seascape Sunset

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Seascape Sunset

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Seascape Sunset   This image looks toward Maui taken from the northwestern shore of the Big Island along the Kona Coast.  Look closely and just beyond the trees lies Maui’s volcano, Haleakalā, (“house of the sun”) rising above the clouds at 10,023 feet.  It’s a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of Maui.  For more information and images, see  Big Island Sunsets | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story  My walkabout was a bit late and a bit unusual.  Seascapes do not come easy for a Midwesterner.   The time just before total darkness has become one of my favorite times to capture images.  And, for you photogs; yes, the Nikon 1 V1 does a nice job in manual mode too.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Looking Forward

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Looking Forward

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Looking Forward    This curious deer silhouette seemed like an ionic scene of White-tailed Deer in a snow storm.  They were far enough away to feel safe, yet too curious to just leave the area.  White-tailed Deer are a curious lot.  As long as they do not feel threatened, they want to know what’s happening.  To me, it’s just amazing how curious they are.  For snow images, see Snow Makes the Image | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story  This image was captured with a few simple clicks after walking outside into the back yard.  Sometimes the best camera is the one you have in your hands.   Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Young Robins    This mother Robin has a family and keeps very busy finding worms to feed her young.  Robins feed their young mostly earthworms along with some fruit.  They tend to eat more earthworms in the morning and more fruit in the afternoon.  For more information and images, see Nesting Robins | a 7 Image Story.

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | C-185 on Skis

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | C-185 on Skis    This Cessna 185 made a nice landing on Lake Sapphire.  After some coffee,  a warm up, hangar flying, I was able to hitch a ride with Steve, the bush pilot owner.  His C-185 wears skis in the winter, floats in the summer, and tires in between.  For more information and images, go to Ski Plane Weekend | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   The snow kicked up by the propeller and skis add to the drama.  The image was captured with a simple click using shutter speed mode and selecting 1/100s to blur the propeller.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Husky Dogsled

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Husky Dogsled

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Husky Dogsled    Huskies love the snow.  They love to run and play in the snow.  They would rather be outside running, playing, working, or just taking a nap in the snow than anything else, except possibly eating.  As natural sled pullers, Huskies instinctively know they should pull the sled with other Huskies in their new pack.  When the harnessed dogs are being attached to the sled, they are very excited; barking, jumping, and talking “Husky”.  As soon the musher calls “mush”, the dogs all become quiet and start pulling the sled.  As soon as the sled stops, they go back to barking and howling.  Several dogs in this team were newcomers to dog sledding.  With fresh snow falling, the trail had not been groomed like they typically are for races so the dogs had to break a new trail in the snow.   For more Husky images, see Husky Dogsled Party | a 7 Image Story.  For more snow images, see Snow Makes the Image | a 7 Image Story.

The Back Story   The snow shower added to the drama of a simple click image.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Anhinga

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Anhinga

Nikon 1 V1 Potpourri | Anhinga    The Anhinga actually swims underwater using its wings with just its head and neck out of the water.  It has a wingspan of about 4 feet and ranges between 32 to 36 inches in length.  Their preferred diet is fish, but will also eat water snakes, tadpoles, frog eggs and young alligators.  Of course, at Everglades NP, they too could be prey to alligators.  As in this image, the Anhinga can be glamorous too.

The Back Story   Sometimes you just get lucky.  Capturing the reflection of the clouds in the water with a bit of backlight was too good to pass up.  It definitely made the entire hike worthwhile.  This image shows the versatility of the Nikon 1 V1 and 70-300mm lens combination on a nature hike.  Note: I post an image everyday at hankconrad.com.
