Landscape Portfolio | River Color Fall presents itself in so many ways. The glassy waters of this UP river instill a bit of calm in us all. Late afternoon light in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula adds to the soft flow of the river and a bit of fall color. For more information and images, see Midwest Fall Color | a 7 Image Story.
The Back Story This image was captured handheld using a tree trunk to keep the D300 steady.

Landscape Portfolio | Tallgrass Prairie Illinois was once covered with tall grass prairie. This fertile land has been mostly converted to farming land. Although Illinois was on on the far eastern edge of the Great American Prairie, it still contains several restored prairies to remind us of their natural beauty. This image comes from the Nachusa Grasslands in northwestern Illinois managed by The Nature Conservancy. See The Great American Prairie | a 7 Image Story for additional information and images,
The Back Story The Nachusa Grasslands has numerous trails through the grasslands. Most images come from simple clicks along the trail.

Landscape Portfolio | Road Tree Each national park has a character of it’s own. “Solitude” describes Wind Cave NP, above the ground, particularly in the off-season. At solitary Wind Cave, it’s all about the land and its wildlife; a nature photographer’s heaven. This image tries to capture some of that solitude with a lonely gravel road as far as the eye can see.
The Back Story A really good image of this tree had eluded me for several years. I have probably taken hundreds of images of this tree. It all started on my first trip to Wind Cave NP in 2008. Wind Cave is secluded and quiet with a feeling of remoteness. You can drive through the park on the one gravel road, stop the car, turn off the engine, and hear: nothing, for a moment, then the sounds of nature. It is totally quiet of the sounds of man and screaming with the sounds of pure nature. I have returned several times since my first trip. Each time capturing images of this lone road tree. This image is one of my one. For more about Wind Cave NP, see Solitude @ Wind Cave | a 7 Image Story.

Landscape Portfolio | Lone Tree on the Badlands Nothing says Great American Prairie like a lone tree on the rolling mixed grass prairie of the Badlands. Lone tree images convey sense of quiet solitude. They remind us how a solitary figure stands tall against all odds. The lone tree provides raw strength to the image as well as a sense of resilience and perseverance.
The Back Story Like many photographers, the lone tree is one of my favorite subjects. Actually, unlike many of my images, I visited this site in Badlands NP many times before the clouds provided a nice background. Then, I moved around the tree to get the right angle on the composition until this basic image filled my viewfinder. The wind was making the leaves on the tree move too much so I waited and waited and waited. All the while, the clouds were moving as well. So, I waited longer. The early morning light was beginning to change. Finally, everything lined up. The clouds looked nice. The wind calmed down a bit. Everything was right with the world in front of me. Click!

Landscape Portfolio | Bison over the Horizon At one time, massive Bison herds roamed the grasslands of North America. Today, small herds are maintained in parts of Canada and several states in the USA. Many national parks also preserve Bison. This image reminds me of how the landscape might have once looked. For more information, see American Bison | a 7 Image Story.
The Back Story An evening drive on the north ridge road in the Badlands NP yielded a nice image.
