Lazy Bull Moose A morning hike along the Gros Ventre River, which flows along the southeast border of the Grand Teton Nation Park, can uncover some photogenic critters. This Bull Moose seemed to be taking his morning nap. He was part of a small herd of two bulls, several cows, and a couple of calves. He did not mind me capturing several images; did not even get up. Remember, I was farther away than the meta data indicates; 140mm x 2.7 corp factor of the Nikon 1 V1 equals nearly a 400mm focal length.

Lamar Valley lies deep inside Yellowstone NP. Although probably best known for the wolf packs that hunt in the valley in the winter, it also provides a beautiful home for wildlife and hikers alike.

Yellowstone Silvertip Grizzly Lamar Valley in Yellowstone provides Grizzly Bears the habitat to be bears. This Silvertip Grizzly was deep in the valley foraging for food to fatten up for winter hibernation. At about 150 yards away, the Nikon V1 with the 70-200mm lens provided the reach to capture the image. The wind was so strong I had a hard time getting a sharp image handheld.

Sunset on the Ranch Just before dinner at a friend’s house, the sun set at the ranch. Although I was a bit late for the sunset, the photo still gives us an idea of what life on the ranch can be. This image was captured without a tripod by carefully balancing the camera on the deck railing.

Mule Deer Buck On the ranch, Mule Deer roam the hills all year long. We scared this one, but I was able to capture this image before he crossed the ridge line. The Nikon 1 V1 with the 70-300mm lens makes a poor man’s 810mm lens; giving a decent image even when handheld.

Hyalite Canyon just keeps drawing you back. It provides the photog with so many different challenges to make great images. In this image, I slowed down the shutter just enough to get blur showing the water movement. On other images, I tried a neutral density filter to slow it down more for even more blur, but I like this one the best. The PC-E lens also helps to put the entire stream in focus.

Yellowstone Elk Yellowstone finally re-opened today and, of course, the elk are still there. This guy seemed oblivious to recent events. He just likes being a good elk. Perhaps, others in the government could learn from him.

Montana Hay & Ice The Montana countryside can be filled with contrasts. The top image reminders us of all we might think about when we think of Montana; hay stacked sky high needed to feed the livestock in the winter. The right across the road someone forgot to turnoff the irrigation system before the first freeze.
