We’re Landing Where? There we were; flying over Sapphire Lake in a Cessna 170 on skis. I’m in the right seat, copilot’s seat. The pilot says; we are landing right down there. As you can see, there’s no runway in site. Instead, we’re landing on Sapphire Lake, then snow taxiing over to a cabin to get some coffee and meet other bush pilots for some hangar flying.

Ready to Taxi It’s a beautiful sunset and 2 degrees above zero; better than yesterday when the high was -14ºF. Flying on cold winter days has its own set of challenges. A bush pilot, I am not. Still, sometimes, cold skies call you to fly. So, let’s fire up and call ground control. We’re ready to taxi.

Storm Coming! The God light is always spectacular to see. What you do not see in this image is the thunderstorm just right (north) of the frame. It eventually got to the airport after we left.

The Flight Ahead Like almost every other day of the year, it was a gorgeous day to go flying. If it were not for the scattered thunderstorms, it would have been near perfect. Before calling ground to get our clearance, just had to make a simple click. The Nikon 1 V1’s small size makes it easier.
