Barred Owl Once More Look closely; it’s the Barred Owl again. It really blends into its surroundings. Without bins, finding a Barred Owl in a forest is nearly impossible; really just luck. Even with bins, it’s difficult. The only way I’ve been able to spot it is to watch where it lands when it flies.

Barred Owl Again After seeing the Barred Owl last night, I went back the same location on tonight’s walkabout and amazingly, the same Barred Owl or a different one was in the area. Tonight’s images are a bit better; a little more light can make a big difference.

Although the Barred Owl is mostly active at night, it will also sometimes hunt in the daytime. Tonight, just after sunset, on my walkabout, this Barred Owl was hunting as I was walking down the trail in a heavily wooded, swampy forest preserve. It favors dense, thick woods with scattered clearings, especially with low-lying, swampy areas. After missing its prey, it perched in a tree along the trail. This image isn’t the best given the high ISO. Still, it gives a sense of what one might uncover on a walkabout in the woods.
